HTC One X at Walmart

If you're in the market for a shiny new HTC One X, and feel like saving $40 bucks, you might want to head to Walmart. The LTE handset will soon be hitting the shelves at just $158, which is a substantial savings over the corporate AT&T store. Of course there's a two-year agreement tied to the phone at this price, but something tells me that the One X is a phone that most of us could live with for two years. Like the sheet above says, the specs are great, Sense 4 is great (yeah, I said it), and the network is plenty fast. People seem to be loving it, and not just reviewers

I'm sure you can find some room in the cart with the dog food and paper towels, so swing by and have a look.

Thanks, eonnx!

Supermoon Saturday: It’s also called the ‘Flower Moon,’ and ‘Milk Moon.’ The ‘supermoon’ will be only 221,802 miles from Earth, the closest to our planet this year.

On Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT, the moon will officially turn full. And only 25 minutes later the moon will also arrive at perigee, its closest approach to Earth ? a distance of 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) away.?

Skip to next paragraph Another “super-Moon” is in the offing. The perigee full Moon in May will be as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons of 2012.

The effect of this coincidence is a stunning skywatching sight called the “supermoon.”

In fact, this month’s perigee is the closest of any perigee in 2012 (they vary by about 3 percent, because the moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular). The result will be a 16 percent brighter-than-average full moon accompanied by unusually high and low tides this weekend and into the new week.

In contrast, later this year, on Nov. 28, the full moon will closely coincide with apogee, the moon’s farthest point from Earth. [Amazing Supermoon Photos from 2011]

Spring tides

Every month, “spring” tides occur when the moon is full and new. The word “spring,” in this case, is derived from the German springen, to “spring up,” and is not ? as is often mistaken ? a reference to the spring season. At these times the moon and sun form a line with Earth, so their tidal effects add together.? The sun, because of its distance, exerts a little less than half the tidal force of the moon.

“Neap” tides, on the other hand, occur at those times when the moon is at first and last quarter and work at cross-purposes with the sun. At these times, tides are weak.

Tidal force varies as the inverse cube of an object’s distance. During the supermoon on Saturday, the moon will be 12.2 percent closer at perigee than it will be two weeks later at apogee, which will nearly coincide with a new moon.? Therefore it will exert 42 percent more tidal force during this weekend’s spring tides than during the spring tides near apogee two weeks later. ?

Although a full moon theoretically lasts just a moment, that moment is imperceptible to ordinary observation, and for a day or so before and after most will speak of seeing the nearly full moon as “full.” The shaded strip is so narrow, and changing in apparent width so slowly, that it is hard for the naked eye to tell whether it is present or on which side it is.?

And while this weekend’s moon will be ? as the Observer’s Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada suggests on page 101 ?- the “largest full moon of 2012,” the variation of the moon’s distance is not readily apparent to observers viewing the moon directly.?

Or is it?

Moon illusion

When the perigee moon lies close to the horizon it can appear absolutely enormous. That is when the famous “moon illusion” combines with reality to produce a truly stunning view.

For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, a low-hanging moon looks incredibly large when hovering near to trees, buildings and other foreground objects. The fact that the moon will be much closer than usual this weekend will only serve to amplify this strange effect.

So, a perigee moon, either rising in the East at sunset or dropping down in the West at sunrise might seem to make the moon appear so close that it almost seems that you could touch it. You can check out this effect for yourself by first noting the times for moonrise and moonset in your area here: http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/data-services/rs-one-year-us

And one final note: Saturday also marks the midpoint of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The exact moment between the March equinox and the June solstice occurs at 10:11 a.m. EDT May 5.? And this spring’s big full moon seemingly places an exclamation point on this seasonal benchmark. Traditionally, the full moon of May is known as the “Flower Moon” since flowers are now abundant most everywhere. It is also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon.

Happy moon watching!

Galaxy S III sign-up page

So enthused with the Galaxy S III that you want to know exactly when in the summer Americans can buy one? You can follow us, of course, but Samsung has you covered with a sign-up page that will take your vitals with promises that you’ll “get the latest on the Next Galaxy.” We wouldn’t read too much into seeing AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and others in the list of carriers to choose from, though. Samsung has run identical sign-up campaigns in the US before, and it focused the initial Galaxy S II launch on three major carriers rather than carpet bombing every network at once.

[Thanks, Michael]

Newcastle University preps in-car GPS for the elderly, helps grandmum get home safely

Most Engadget readers will have grown up with GPS, but the UK’s Newcastle University has realized that many in the older generation might be first-timers and unfamiliar with all those keep-lefts and turn-rights. Development is underway at the school for a new satellite navigation system that would be easier and more intuitive for your grandfolks, with features that include calling out direction changes by landmark names, limiting turns to the safer variety and keeping the route off of high-speed motorways. When this might come to your local high street shop isn’t known, but the university has a £12 million ($19.5 million) research grant to help sort that out.

‘It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song,’ Diplo tells BBC Radio of B’s 2011 single, which sampled his Major Lazer song.
By James Montgomery

<P>This may come as a surprise to devoted disciples of the Queen B, but according to producer Diplo, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a>'s 2011 single "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/beyonce/654804/run-the-world-girls.jhtml#artist=1236911">Run the World (Girls)</a>" actually started as "a joke."</P><P>"I think a lot of people don't even realize where that song came from," Diplo told <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/17907948" target="_blank">BBC Radio's Newsbeat</a>. "That song never really had a push. It was a song we did, kind of like a funny, kind-of-a-joke song."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Beyoncé – &quot;Run The World (Girls)&quot;" id="vid:654804" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P><a href="/news/articles/1664181/beyonce-run-the-world-girls-video.jhtml">"Run the World"</a> was released as the first single from Bey's much-anticipated <a href="/news/articles/1666507/beyonce-4-album.jhtml"><i>4</i> album</a>, though it was met with a slightly <a href="/news/articles/1664218/beyonce-run-the-world-girls-video.jhtml">puzzled reaction</a> from some of her die-hard fans and failed to generate much heat on the charts, reaching only #29 on the <i>Billboard</i> Hot 100. Subsequent singles "Best Thing I Never Had" and "Love on Top" fared slightly better, going as high as #16.</P><P>Of course, Diplo isn't actually credited as a producer on "Run the World" (that honor would go to The-Dream, Switch, Beyoncé herself and Shea Taylor), but he did snag a writing credit, thanks to the song's hefty sample of his Major Lazer track "Pon de Floor." But he did produce the <i>4</i> track "End of Time" and remembered the experience as a surreal one.</P><P>"We had to finish up a few records we were working with her on," Dip said. "That was super-weird, man. Like, I remember we were in the studio working with her and I <i>still</i> couldn't believe it."</p>

Logitech's definition of strong? A range of mice that taste forgot

Logitech has unveiled the global graffiti collection, a range of peripherals that are inspired by the “global community”. We’re not sure if this is the start of the “strong” lineup of products new president Bracken P. Darrell promised or he’s trying to get rid of the, erm, more colorful devices from his predecessor’s tenure. Either way, if you’re interested in picking up the gear, it’ll set you back between $30 and $40 when they arrive in the US in May and from June in Europe.
